Dear Mom: A Letter Of Gratitude To All Moms

One day out of the year, we have this beautiful opportunity to give back the people who have given us so much: our moms.

Many of us will be celebrating the ‘other mother’ in our lives. For me, she’s the woman who raised me for a short period of time, or the woman that walked me to school on the first day, the one who wiped the tears from my face when my heart broke for the very first time. Each lesson they’ve imparted upon me has been stored away so that one day I might pass it on to my own children when the time is right. Except there’s one thing, she is not my mother. She’s not even biologically related to me.

They say that blood is thicker than water. But perhaps that proverb doesn’t always hold true. Every year we celebrate the remarkable mothers who have taught us right from wrong — but what about the other women who stepped up to the plate when times were tough?

Today I am honoring the world’s “other mothers.” Women who have provided care, guidance and support for children who are not biologically their own. From stepmothers who made incredible sacrifices to teachers who sought to inspire beyond the classroom, I highlight you today on Mothers Day 2014!

Much love to the women that made me who I am today.
